PolicyAs a freelancer, I have turned my attention to my first love: public policy.
I first worked in policy as a parliamentary researcher in the House of Commons (UK), first for the Scottish National Party and then for Labour. Though I then spent the next 15 years as a journalist, I focused my coverage on policy throughout those years. Now back in Montreal, I have made policy a central focus of my career. |
Municipal/Environmental Policy:
Environment
As a member of environmental organisation For Our Kids’ Montreal team, I have been undertaking policy research, preparing reports, and presenting reports to municipal officials on ways to advance the ecological transition in Montreal and minimise wasteful, carbon-emitting processes.

As a member of environmental organisation For Our Kids’ Montreal team, I have been undertaking policy research, preparing reports, and presenting reports to municipal officials on ways to advance the ecological transition in Montreal and minimise wasteful, carbon-emitting processes.
In the last 18 months:
- I co-authored the organisation’s formal response to Montreal’s consultation on improving the construction industry’s industrial footprint, focusing on using reusable, biodegradable materials and cutting down on diesel for fuel;
- With a team, I represented the organisation in a face-to-face consultation with MP Rachel Bendayan to underline our concerns and push for the speedy implementation of federal clean energy legislation;
- I coordinated research among the team to present the organisation’s response to Montreal’s Urban Mobility Plan. I then solely presented our representations to municipal government officials and local mayors, which called my presentation “inspiring.” (Many of our recommendations were then included in their final report to the Mayor);
- I am currently coordinating research for the organisation’s response to Montreal’s 2050 Land Use Plan. I also drafted and wrote an op-ed detailing our organisation’s position on the plan for the Montreal Gazette. I am also presenting our position to municipal officials later this month.
- I was nominated to be recognised by the Reseau des femmes en environnement (Network of Women in Environment) for my environmental activism
- In October, I provided commentary and participated in the City of Montreal's Consultation process on its PUM (Plan d'urbanisme et de mobilité 2050). Click here to watch.
Community Relations:
In 2023, I was asked by an Outremont councillor to stand as a board member for the Table de Quartier d’Outremont as a board member, and was elected.
Montreal contains 19 boroughs (arrondissements), and many have Tables de Quartier to mobilise and coordinate the efforts of local borough organisations. Outremont launched its Table de Quarter in 2021.
As a member of the board/conseil d’administration, I have:
In August, the Outremont government appointed me as one of 6 members of a new table, the Table de Bon Voisinage (Table of Good Neighbours). This table will focus on improving relationships between non-Hasidic and Hasidic residents in Outremont, a subject close to my heart as a longtime New Yorker.
The table will be developing and implementing community programs and events to encourage greater cohesion and sense of community.

Geopolitics and Critical Minerals:
This year, I have started working with Bedford Analysis, a UK-based critical minerals and geopolitics consultancy, to produce a series of reports. Reports soon to be published include a geopolitical look at the trouble with REEs, why Central Asia may be a mineral source in decades to come, and the impact of the US election and both parties' platforms on US critical minerals.
