Mining Magazine
Mining Magazine is a London-based magazine that covers mining policies as well as trends in new mining-related technologies.
When I joined Mining Magazine in Montreal (working internationally and remotely) in 2021, I worked as part of a three-person team that produced a 32-page magazine every month, as well as daily news updates and in-depth webinar interviews with mine suppliers.
During this period, several trends were ascendant in regards to the mining industry: continued pressure to improve environmental sustainability while balancing a tight budget, a growing recognition of the importance of minerals in the ecological transition (which became “critical minerals”), and the importance of adjusting mining processes to be more ecologically friendly.

Highlights:
Each article required an enormous amount of research, first on the technologies involved, then on the environmental issues it faced as well as the economic policies in effect at the mine site. Policies were centred around mine sites in Brazil, the United States, Canada, South Africa, Mali, Serbia, Kazakhstan, and other countries.
Next, I needed to find the responsible individuals in companies and government departments to interview.
Finally, I needed to tie together the research and the quotes from my sources to create an engaging, informative article.

- Quebec targets pole position in critical minerals circularity race, in which I spoke to lawyers and CEOs of companies aiming to assist Quebec in mining critical minerals in environmentally-friendly ways;
- Canada faces net-zero asset test, in which I speak to metallurgists who struggle with meeting Canada’s net-zero policies while attempting to increase mines’ metal recovery rates;
- Tackling carbon from several angles, in which I covered a number of new mines and outlined and analysed their processes which are designed to minimise carbon extractions;
- Church of England rattles tailings sabre, which detailed CofE’s investment stance on pushing more mining companies to be held responsible for tailings management; this article holds the record for most reads ever on the website.
Each of my articles required extensive time on the following steps:
- Research on relevant policy areas, monitoring policy landscape of mining and environmental requirements
- Stakeholder engagement, in contacting and connecting with as many stakeholders in the issue as possible, from local organisations to government agencies to the mine companies
- Communications, in developing public-facing documents on policy areas, drafting engaging and informative reports, and accurately summarising policy positions, while identifying, managing, and responding to policy uncertainty and ambiguity
