Challenges in Environmental Reporting - City University London MA Journalism Thesis
FISHING FOR DISASTER: OVERFISHING IN THE NORTH SEA
I first became interested in fisheries management as a research intern for the Scottish National Party in 2003, as they responded to (or exploited?) the outcry against the EU's 2002 Common Fisheries Policy.
The CFP broke with long-standing EU tradition to do nothing drastic to curtail the rapid demise of fish stocks in all European waters, and slashed the number of permitted fishing fleets and fishermen's days at sea.
This thesis explores the effects of the 2002 measures five years after its implementation. I wanted to see not only how the measures impacted the livelihoods of Scottish fishermen (who were hardest hit and sustained the largest proportion of boats being decommissioned), but also the ecosystem and the fish themselves. In my research and interviews, I hoped to present as clear a portrayal of the North Shore fisheries as they are now, with the least amount of bias and scientific jargon.
